About Jo Gravina

Sydney Psychologist

Having worked with some of the most vulnerable and marginalised communities in Sydney, Jo has the ability to make anyone feel at ease. She understands that trust, compassion, and understanding are central tenets of a therapeutic relationship, and views the opportunity to be witness to a patient’s story as a privilege. She prides herself on her warm and friendly demeanour, as well as her ability to maintain a non-judgmental approach to her clients, no matter what issues they face. Jo views her role as much more than a job. She sees it as an opportunity to enrich the lives of others, through the union of evidence based therapy and benevolence.

Jo completed her undergraduate training at Charles Sturt University. There, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) as well as a Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology)(Honours). She was awarded two Dean’s Awards of Academic Excellence during her undergraduate study. Jo went on to complete her postgraduate qualification at Macquarie University, where she obtained a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology, and was awarded a Vice-Chancellor’s Commendation for Academic Excellence. Jo is a member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and is registered with the national governing body, the Psychology Board of Australia as a Clinical Psychologist (Reg #: PSY0001705876).

Together with her background in the community services sector, Jo has approximately 20 years experience in supporting clients affected by mental illness. She has worked in a range of settings including government and non-government departments, from the Department of Corrective Services to youth and women’s accommodation services. These experiences have provided Jo with a robust understanding of social issues such as racism, gender disparity, child protection and domestic and sexual violence, which she incorporates into her treatment approach as appropriate.

As a former therapist for the internationally renowned Macquarie University Social Phobia treatment program, Jo’s main area of interest is in working with individuals suffering from social anxiety. Her other interests include depressive disorders, trauma and stressor-related disorders, substance-related and addictive disorders, sexual disorders, personality disorders and other anxiety disorders. Jo is trained in a range of evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and motivational interviewing and schema therapy.
